About Us
Who We Are

In uniting people through the common goals of fitness and exploration, we seek to foster the community spirit by bringing people from all walks of life together, encourage life-long walking for fitness and kindle the spirit of exploration.

About Walk California

Walk California is a community of thousands of people that enjoys getting together to take walks and hikes in and around their home areas. It is an effective way for people to find local walking and hiking partners on a spontaneous or scheduled basis, and a leading resource for people who want to initiate, schedule or announce walks for fun and fitness.

Through their work in the Walk California, our members are demonstrating the power of volunteer service to connect with the community, build a healthier lifestyle, reach fitness goals, and explore local areas.

Walk California was started in San Francisco in December 2002 by California native and walking enthusiast Scott Blumin. What began as a local group has grown to more than 4000 members, statewide.

Initially, Blumin's vision was to provide a combination recreational resource and social outlet on an “everyone's welcome” basis. Soon, people discovered Walk California provided an effective way to find others with the same motivations and goals. The group evolved to meet the needs of members who wanted to increase their overall health and fitness levels while exploring their cities.

Crossing gender, culture, and age barriers, Walk California chapters have now formed across the state. Members range from advanced walkers and experienced hikers to beginners and novices. Volunteers help coordinate and promote walking and hiking activities. The organization's website was launched in 2005.

An added benefit is that Walk California helps build and support a sense of community among members in their local areas. As Blumin says, “Our members are really excited about this concept. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise and belonging to Walk California brings so many advantages along with it. A simple activity like walking or hiking can positively and radically change your lifestyle.”
